Year 2017 is over and with it also the busiest period for the Oscar Senior team. In our case, the end of the year is not only about paperwork, but more importantly, about our users and their families. Since we’ve been busy with delivering as much as we can to our users, I have not yet been able to sit down and evaluate the past year.
Now as I open my diary and include last month’s recap, I can start reviewing the past year. Yes, I still use a paper diary, my Doller, which I have changed from a Moleskine more than a year ago. I know that business does not start on January 1st, however, it is undoubtedly a good date for reflecting on ideas, visions, and dreams.
Together with my team, we are going to fill the blank pages of 2018. We’ll be celebrating our second official birthday in Oscar Senior this year. It’s funny to think that our idea was born a few years back, and thousands of hours have been spent on sessions with our users to understand how to bring technology into seniors’ hands. And we still do not know everything… we still have much to learn, every day.
But coming back to my year end evaluation. As we know, the personal and business lives of entrepreneurs are tightly connected. And it is the same for me. So I would like to take this review from a personal perspective and point out a few things I am proud to share with you.
There are a few important points which have defined my past year and that of Oscar Senior.
- Team Spirit
- Google Residency
- Books & Travel
As we know in business, there are ups and downs, so – never give up. This “cliché” really made our year. Even though we’ve experienced hard times, I’ve never seen any sign that any one of us would give up. Our team members all stayed strong, positive and used every possible resource at the time to deliver to our users. That has given me boundless energy.
We’ve been at CES (who could have imagined this a few years ago), we’ve developed Oscar Senior for the smartphone in an extremely short time, and we have also opened several great business partnerships.
Thank you is not enough, but for now, thank you guys.
One day we were contacted to be one of the ten startups to participate in the Google Residency program in Warsaw, Poland. Exciting news! However, this meant moving to Warsaw while we all have our personal lives, and… my list of worries continued. But it was just in my head. Once I asked the team, they immediately grabbed the chance and were packed and ready within days. Since then, it’s been an awesome ride together.
Thank you Google.
Books & Travel
If I’ve been told by somebody that in 2017 I will have read over 10 books and I will visit more than 10 countries I would probably laugh at them.
Today I can say that I have read a total of 21 books, even though a few of them have been audiobooks and I bought their paper version afterwards. I just cannot imagine traveling by car without an audiobook anymore. If I could recommend some of the business and personal development books I’ve read, I would probably highlight Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod.
From the others I really liked Shoe Dog by Phil Knight, Czech Mole in the CIA by Vladimir Sevela or the classic Hotel by Arthur Hailey. Thank you all who gave me the inspiration for the books.
Travelling is my other passion and this year I had the opportunity to fulfill a few of my dreams. Two destinations will live in my memory for a long time. Firstly, I visited the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), an amazing adventure. Secondly, I spent two days in one of the biggest slums in the world in Mumbai, India. Thanks to this eye-opening trip, I had a chance to think about life itself, about values and about my own personal goals.
Even though Oscar Senior users were not listed above, it does not mean that they’re any less important. As a matter of fact, you are very important. Our team has received a lot of valuable feedback from you for which we are very grateful. Thank you for being with us.
As a final closing statement, I would like to wish you all the best in 2018. Make this year even more awesome than the previous one. Make your dreams come true!
